Celtic have not had the best transfer record recently when it comes to signing players. More often than not, these signings have failed to have the impact that you would expect of them, raising questions about the recruitment team as a result.

One such player is Maryan Shved. The Ukrainian joined from Karpaty Lviv for a transfer fee of around €2 million after scoring 22 goals and providing 8 assists over two seasons for them. It is safe to say though that things have not turned out as expected for the winger.

He only managed three substitute appearances for the Hoops although he did find the back of the net once in just 40 minutes of football. And he was allowed to leave on a season-long loan to Belgian side KV Mechelen.

Things started out shakily there as well but Shved has made an incredible turn around since and now has 4 goals and an assist to his name, despite playing just 566 minutes of football for the Belgian side. And it looks like he would like to make his stay there permanent, admitting that his decision to move to Parkhead was perhaps the wrong choice with an offer from Genk apparently on the table as well.

Shved appears to regret joining Celtic

As reported by the Daily Record, the Ukrainian winger said:

"“They even made a higher offer than Celtic. But after consultation with my brokers [agent], we ultimately opted for Celtic.“In retrospect, that may not have been the right choice. If I knew what I know now, I might have chosen the Belgian league and signed with Genk.“I would love to be here and I also want to help the club (Mechelen) to continue their rise in the rankings but it is too early to talk about a definitive transfer.“If the clubs can make an arrangement, then I’m definitely willing to listen. I don’t rule out anything.“I don’t want to talk about Celtic. I am sitting here now and I am good here. We will see what happens.”"

If Shved does indeed want to leave then the best option would be for the club to try and come to an agreement with KV Mechelen over a transfer fee. We have already seen what having too many wantaway players in a squad can do to results and there is no way we should repeat that next season.

The talent is clear for all to see with Shved though and with a new manager expected to come in, it might be worth seeing if he does indeed want to stay. Right-wing has been a position of problem for quite some time now and the Ukrainian could be the perfect answer to that problem if he can show that he can get it done in Scottish football.

In that regard, his recent comments are not encouraging though as it very much sounds like he would prefer a move away from the club.
