It is no secret that Celtic were very close to signing Ben Davies from Preston North End before Liverpool swooped in late to get a deal done.

Some reports had suggested that the Hoops and Davies had agreed terms on a pre-contract but as it turns out, that was not the case. The club once again made the mistake of trying to get a player for as cheap as possible, for free in the summer in this case, and it ended up costing them dearly.

Judging from the fact that he is going to the current Premier League champions, it is safe to say that Davies certainly has a lot of potential and probably would have managed to sort out the Hoops’ issues at the back. Unfortunately, now they are back to square one.

This is not the only transfer blow that Liverpool have dealt Celtic in this window though as they have also managed to get a deal done for their 19-year-old goalkeeper Liam Hughes as reported by the Mirror.

This is starting to become a massive worry for Celtic

Not too long ago, Celtic were the side who were bringing in youngsters from top clubs from around Europe. The tables have turned now though and this continues a worrying trend for the Hoops.

They lost both Liam Morrison and Barry Hepburn to Bayern Munich while Josh Adam decided to move to Manchester City. And now, Hughes is the latest name who has departed Parkhead.

It is hard to blame these players though. The chance to play for one of those clubs is very enticing, especially considering the fact that the Hoops have failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League three years in a row. And their recent record of bringing players through the academy has also been very poor, which must have made their decision easier.

Ultimately, the club need to find a way of keeping hold of their best talents or it will become increasingly difficult for them to keep up with clubs around Europe, who work on a much higher budget than the Scottish giants.
