Celtic board have an interim manager right under their noses

At times of madness, ridiculous ideas and plans become more normal. And one of them might help Celtic come out of the rut that they currently find themselves in.

Could Scott Brown become interim Celtic manager if Neil Lennon was sacked? It’s a crazy thought, but as so many strange things have happened this season, that it is hard to count this one out completely.

It’s not totally clear why Lennon remains. He doesn’t seem to show any signs of walking away despite the performances showing no signs of improvement. He does still seem to believe that he is the man to turn this season around although we are about to enter February.

The board are showing no sign of removing the manager from his post either. After Saturday’s defeat at the hands of St Mirren, there is a case to be made that the board need to do so as much for Lennon’s sake as for the club.

Things cannot get any worse at Celtic

But why haven’t the top bosses at Celtic done so? It’s not results keeping him there. It’s not going to be player power. If they are relying on glimmers of future hope then we all need to be able to share that vision. Most likely they are struggling to find a suitable replacement.

Martin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan have apparently been approached and declined. And who can blame them if it’s only until the end of the season. Nobody wants to be associated with a failed 10IAR campaign.

Peter Lawwell’s upcoming retirement allows for changes to be made at Parkhead. It will allow for a new future, but does it only add another hiatus right now. A reluctance to make significant change until after the handover? That and what the next few months might hold could be enough to put off other new or even old faces. Mark Hughes and Rafa Benitez may well think there’s a more sensible and better opportunity for their talents than what they see at Celtic right now. And the club may not want to go down riskier routes with the likes of Roy Keane.

Who would be brave enough to step in? Who could the board place hope in? And that’s where just maybe they should consider Scott Brown.

Would the players react to him positively? He’d surely have the respect of many of them and would need plenty of good support around him. Yes, of course it’s ridiculous given his limited coaching or managerial experience, but at this stage, it surely could not get any worse.

This isn’t a plea to make it happen. This isn’t a demand for Broony to be appointed. It’s no more than another thought being brought to the table. Desperate times may just call for and lead to very desperate measures.
