To very honest, Celtic fans are not hoping for much these days going into games. The league is gone and there is very little to play for at the moment. Of course, the second spot is up for grabs but most expect them to get that.

But after today’s performance, there is a discussion to be had regarding that as well. We will save that for another day though and focus on Neil Lennon for now.

There is no questioning that Lennon is a club legend. But after how the club have performed this season, it is safe to say that his legacy has taken quite a few hits. And for all that he has done good for the club, the first thing that will probably always be associated with him is being the manager who completely botched the club’s 10IAR campaign. That is sad but just the truth.

Many Celtic fans raised questions when the club had decided to bring him back for a second stint as manager. And although he did deliver five straight trophies, it is safe to say that he has failed to deliver what he was brought in to do and that is to secure 10IAR.

Celtic just keep getting worse with every passing week

Today, there was another disappointment to add to a season that has been full of them — a 2-1 defeat at home against St Mirren. The last time the visitors had won at Parkhead was in 1990 but then we have seen many such droughts come to an end through the course of this campaign.

Lennon’s comments after the game should concern the board as well, as he appears to be a figure who has put down his tools now. As reported by the Daily Record, he said:

"“They just look… it can’t be confidence.“Because there’s no real pressure on them and there are no fans here.“There’s a lack of belief or a lack of quality, and they’ve got the quality they’ve proved that over the years.“For whatever reason – and it’s not just individuals it’s collective – really poor goals defensively and offensively really not good enough.“With the amount of the ball we had, even at the end, our final ball, free-kicks going into the goalkeeper’s hands. Just fading out.”"

It is clear that both the manager and the players are out of ideas now and the performances are just getting worse with every passing gameday. It is clear that the time to bring in a new manager has come. It has been clear for quite a while now. But the board have refused to make the change.

Steven Gerrard’s side have done their part this season to be fair to them. But that does not change the fact that Celtic have been absolutely atrocious. Even in 2021, they have managed 1 win from 6 games, which just goes to show the kind of season they are going through.

To be brutally honest, it is very surprising that the club have decided to stick with Lennon even after all this. And they probably will till the end of the season. Let’s just hope that it does not end up costing them a place in the Champions League qualifiers as well.
