With Celtic sitting 20 points behind the Rangers in the Premiership table, out of Europe and the Scottish League Cup and showing no signs of improvement, it is pretty clear that Neil Lennon will be shown the Parkhead exit door sooner or later. When that does happen, it will be important that the club find the right man to replace him.

Lennon returning for a second stint was always seen as a poor decision on the part of the board. He is not someone who is at the same level as Brendan Rodgers as a manager. And when the Northern Irishman does leave, the aim of the Hoops should be to show some ambition once again and bring in a top level manager.

The names that have dominated the headlines till now with regards to this are Eddie Howe and Rafa Benitez. While many have also suggested that the club won’t go for a big name appointment and instead get someone like Jack Ross or Steve Clarke.

Recent events might have changed that though. Earlier today, Frank Lampard was sacked by Chelsea though. And naturally, he is being linked with the Celtic job, according to The Scottish Sun.

Could Frank Lampard succeed as Celtic manager?

It is hard to call Lampard’s stint at Chelsea as a manager – a failure. He did brilliantly last season to secure them a top four finish in the Champions League despite a transfer ban and Eden Hazard leaving. And they had a bright start to this season as well before falling off over the past couple of months. Before that, he also managed to take Derby County to the Championship play-off final.

As a result, it does appear that he does have qualities as a manger. Yes, he is far from the finished product at the moment. But he has been a top player and that does have its merits.

Many will point towards the fact that he was sacked by Chelsea but then, that happened with the likes of Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Felipe Luiz Scolari and Antonio Conte as well. And all of them are all-time great managers.

While many Celtic fans probably won’t be delighted with the appointment of someone like Lampard, it does have a lot of pros. Yes, getting someone like Howe or Benitez would be preferable but the Englishman is not a bad back-up plan to have in case those plans fall through.
