A number of questions have been raised regarding Neil Lennon’s Celtic future after their disastrous performances and results this season. As things stand, they are out of Europe and the Scottish League Cup, and while still mathematically possible, the league race is as good as over in reality as well.

The Rangers have a huge 20 point lead at the top of the table and the form that the Hoops have shown this year, drawing three and losing one of their four games till now, suggests that the gap will only increase going forward.

Thus, there have been calls for Lennon to be shown the exit door for quite some time now. But nothing has come to fruition yet, with many reports even suggesting that the board could let the Northern Irish manager see out the season before making a change.

Stephen McGowan of the Daily Mail has reported how much they will need to pay Lennon as a payoff if they do indeed decide to sack him:

"Chris Sutton insists Neil Lennon should walk away from Celtic to salvage his Parkhead legacy. Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Livingston left the champions 20 points behind Rangers and without a win in 2021, with hopes of ten in a row all but gone. Due a £300,000 pay-off if Celtic sack him, a defiant Lennon has enraged supporters by insisting he won’t quit."

Things at Celtic have shown no sign of improvement under Lennon

Lennon is believed to be on a 12-month rolling contract, meaning that it is likely that the board won’t have to pay him any compensation fee if they let him go at the end of the season. But is that the reason why they are holding on to him?

If it is, then it could be a major mistake as the financial consequences of the move could be much worse. The Hoops might very well have to compete for the second spot this season if they continue to drop points at this rate and missing out would be an absolute disaster when it comes to their European campaign next season.

There has not been any sign of improvement under Lennon for quite some time now but the manager has insisted that he won’t walk out of the job. Thus, the ball is in the board’s court to make a decision that is best for Celtic moving forward.
