It might be time to admit that there is no way Celtic are going to rescue the league campaign this season. The fans had hoped that the Hoops could turn things around in the new year but 2021 has produced three draws and a defeat. As a result, they find themselves 20 points behind the Rangers in the Premiership table.

Thus, it is clear that the club will have to undergo a massive overhaul in the summer if they want to close down the massive gap that has opened up between the two Glasgow clubs next season. With a number of players expected to leave, quite a few new faces should come in through the Parkhead door as well.

One man who has been extensively linked with a move is Crystal Palace’s James McCarthy. The Republic of Ireland international will be out of contract in the summer and there are very few things that the Hoops love more than a free agent.

While he has enjoyed quite a successful career down South, it looks like Celtic fans are not very impressed with the McCarthy rumours:

Could a move for James McCarthy make sense for Celtic?

To be very honest, McCarthy is a terrific midfielder on his day. But there will be questions regarding him after the horrific leg break that he had suffered during his time back at Everton. He has come back since then though and done quite well when given the chance to play at Crystal Palace.

With Scott Brown getting up there in age, Celtic could do much worse than signing McCarthy on a free transfer. At 30 years of age, he still has quite a few years of football left in the tank. And having grown up as a fan of the Hoops, it might not end up being too difficult to convince him to make the move to Parkhead.

Now, surely there would be concerns from the fans, especially after how the move for Shane Duffy turned out. But that would be an unfair stick to measure McCarthy with. To be brutally honest, his career in England is much more impressive than that of the Brighton and Hove Albion defender. And just because it did not work out for one player, it does not mean that we stop bringing in players from the Premier League altogether.
