Neil Lennon’s ‘treble’ claim shows why he needs to be gone

There is no doubt that Celtic are in the middle of their worst season in recent memory. With the club aiming for a historic 10IAR, there was always the fear that the pressure could get to them. Nobody would have expected a collapse of this magnitude though.

They are out of Europe, out of the Scottish League Cup and as good as out of the Premiership title race. And it will be a miracle if things are even close at the end of the season.

In fact, it might be time that the Hoops start worrying about second place because there is legitimate danger that either Hibernian or Aberdeen could overtake them in the future, judging from the frequency at which Neil Lennon’s side are dropping points at the moment.

It appears to be having no effect on the manager though as he is adamant that there is a campaign against him in the media. His latest comment about the ‘treble’ just serves as proof of that.

Neil Lennon is a man living in his former Celtic glories

As reported by the Daily Record, when asked about his Parkhead future, Lennon said:

"“My job is to carry on and get the best out of the team. It’s only a month ago we won a treble. A month.“There is a bloodlust out there for me to lose my job and there has been for quite a while, but that’s sort of the nature of being a football manager in this day and age.”"

It is hard to believe that even Lennon himself believes that he has done a half-decent job this season. The Hoops are staring at the prospect of a trophyless campaign. That is always bad for a club of this size.

The ‘treble’ that they won was from last season. They have achieved absolutely nothing this time around. And football has always been a game about the ‘now’. It is not like anything has changed just because Lennon is the man in charge this time around.

Certainly people had hoped that the manager would have stepped down himself after seeing the performances of the team. These comments show that there is no hope of that happening though. The board did promise a revaluation of his position this month and it is hard to see how they can stick with him at this stage. But then again, anything can happen at Celtic these days.
