Dermot Desmond has been backed to make a major appointment in the summer after Celtic’s disastrous 10IAR campaign.

It is safe to say that nobody could have foreseen how badly Celtic’s campaign to secure a historic 10IAR would fall apart. Yes, the Rangers had improved over the past few years and a challenge from the other side of town was expected.

But the Hoops could not even walk two steps this season without falling to a new low. As a result, their hopes of winning the league appear to be already over and we are just in January.

On the back of these events, Celtic fans have clearly not been happy with the club. While Neil Lennon and Peter Lawwell have had to shoulder the lion’s share of the blame, Dermot Desmond has not been exempt either. And it is clear that he needs to make some kind of a statement in the summer.

The Scottish Sun journalist Derek McGregor believes that that could come in the form of a ‘Hollywood’ appointment when it comes to their next manager. Appearing on the Celtic Huddle podcast and as cited by This is Futbol, McGregor said:

"“I think throughout Dermot Desmond’s tenure, he’s not really one that makes statements, they’re very, very rare – but what he tends to do is make dramatic moves. It’s by actions that he makes his statements. There’s been no bigger one than when he brought Brendan Rodgers in. In terms of a wow factor, that was huge.“The theory was that at the time, he felt he had to act big in the aftermath of an embarrassing cup semi-final defeat to a then-Championship Rangers and he certainly acted with conviction. Will he do the same again this time? I think it could well be the case. Clearly, season ticket sales are massive for Celtic. I think certainly we’re looking at a tumultuous summer for Celtic. I think there could be huge change from top to bottom. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Dermot decided to opt for a kind of so-called Hollywood name as such.”"

It is hard to see who Celtic could appoint at this point of time who would be on the same level as Brendan Rodgers. It is pointless discussing names like Massimiliano Allegri and Thomas Tuchel. Can the club get someone like Quique Setien?

He was the manager of Real Betis before getting the role at FC Barcelona and spectacularly failing. His sides have been known in the past to play some spectacular attacking football though, which is the reason he was appointed by the Catalan giants. Even bringing him in would be tough but feels like something that can be done. Other great managers available right now are Maurizio Sarri and Lucian Favre.

It does feel like that if Celtic do end up going for a big name signing, it would be someone like Eddie Howe. While he might not be a household name, the Englishman did spectacularly to take Bournemouth from the fourth division to the Premier League and keeping them there for five seasons. Desmond could certainly do much worse than that.
