Celtic could reportedly be looking to sign the 17-year-old Wigan Athletic wonderkid for free when his contract runs out in the summer.

If there is one thing the Celtic board loves more than anything else, it is getting players on the cheap. Of course, it is done with hopes that they develop into good players so that they can be allowed to leave in the future for a considerable profit.

That policy has served the club well but is starting to fall apart now as it becomes increasingly difficult to land good bargains and the flops over the seasons are also starting to pile up. Even then, you cannot possibly go wrong with signing someone for free.

And if that someone is a highly-rated teen wonderkid from down the South, then even better. For Celtic, that guy could be Wigan Athletic’s youth captain, Sean McGurk.

Everybody is well aware of Wigan Athletic’s recent financial problems. They went into administration last year and got relegated to the League One due to a 12-point penalty. It also led them to letting players leave for bargain prices as they fought to stay afloat. As a result, a number of highly-rated youngsters have left the club in the recent past, including Antonee Robinson, who was once a £10 million target for AC Milan.

Wigan’s academy is nothing to scoff at as they have produced players like Leighton Baines in the past and continue to produce good players.

The worry is that Celtic are playing the waiting game once again. That leaves a lot of scope for the player to go elsewhere, either now or in the near when he is free to do so. When it comes to a pre-contract agreement, it is completely down to McGurk regarding who he wants to join, with the Rangers in the race for his signature as well.

Hopefully, the Hoops’ recent history of developing world class players like Moussa Dembele, Virgil van Dijk and Kieran Tierney, who have gone on to play for European giants, will convince McGurk that a move to Parkhead is the best decision for his future in the game.
