With the Rangers also in the race for the player, it looks like Celtic want to get a deal over the line quickly as he will be a free agent in the summer.
It looks like it will be a tug-of-war between the two Glasgow giants as both Celtic and the Rangers want Charlton Athletic’s highly-rated midfielder Alfie Doughty.
Celtic have been linked with the 21-year-old for quite some time now. In fact, they had even lodged multiple bids for the youngster in the summer but they were pushed by the League One club. Now, they might be kicking themselves for doing so as it looks very likely that Doughty will be walking out for free in the summer.
And if he does, it looks like he will have no lack of suitors. Along with the two Scottish giants, Stoke City are also interested in his signature as reported by the Glasgow Times:
"Charlton ace Alfie Doughty has a decision to make after Celtic and Rangers both lodged pre-contract offers for the player. Both sides of the Glasgow divide are keen on the left-sided player and Herald and Times Sport understands they have offered terms to the 21-year-old as well as Stoke City who could land him this month after offering around £650,000.The three-way battle for his signature comes down to Doughty’s choice and he could still opt to remain at the Addicks until the end of the season when he would then move to either the Hoops or Gers."

Judging by the calibre of the teams interested in him, Doughty surely seems to be someone with a bright future ahead of him. The fact that he is injured right now and even that has not stopped sides for going after him shows a lot.
Stoke City are even ready to pay a transfer fee to make sure that they get his signing over the line. But with just six months left on his contract, the player himself is the one in the driver’s seat right now. And with offers from all three clubs on the table, he will most likely decide his future soon.
That could see him stay at Charlton Athletic till the end of the season or leave immediately, it is all up to him. We can only hope that the fact that the Hoops had made multiple bids for him in the summer has convinced the player about how highly the club value him and his mind is made up on a move to Parkhead.
