Celtic fans were left angry with the latest transfer news and considering how the season has turned out, it is hard to argue with them.

When Celtic signed Shane Duffy from Brighton and Hove Albion on a season-long loan, many would have expected him to be the best defender in Scottish football. He had proved himself to be a Premier League quality centre-back and was brought into to provide some much needed steel to Neil Lennon’s backline.

A few months on and it looks like these predictions could not have been any more wrong. The Republic of Ireland international has endured an absolute nightmare since moving to Parkhead and fans are already calling for him to be sent back to his parent club.

Another man who had been on Celtic’s radar before Duffy was brought in was American centre-back Mark McKenzie. He has continued to flourish in the MLS since then and has now completed a move to KRC Genk believed to be worth around £5 million.

The Belgian side confirmed the news today although it had been hinted at a couple of days earlier by Anthony Joseph. It is safe to say that some fans were not impressed:

To be honest, it is only in hindsight that the move for Duffy looks like a bad one. When rumours of the Republic of Ireland arriving had originally broken out, fans were delighted. He was viewed as a lifelong fan of the club who was coming to make sure that 10IAR was secured. Reality has been different.

It looks like Duffy is completely out of his depth in this team and the recruitment team has to take most of the blame. It appears that he does not have the qualities to succeed at a club like Celtic. And while he is a good player in the right system, this clearly is not that.

You also have to wonder how much being a Hoops fan plays a part in that. His confidence also looks completely shot right now. And whatever may be the case, all in all he has been an absolute flop.

As a result, the board must be kicking themselves that they did not end up going for McKenzie, whose value has already gone up since the summer.
