Celtic are free to make a move to bring back the former star to Parkhead in the January transfer window as his loan deal has been terminated.

It is funny how things can fall perfectly into place at times. Celtic are in desperate need of a centre-back right now after Christopher Jullien has been declared to be out of action for three to four months due to injury.

And the only reliable option that they have in that position right now is Kristoffer Ajer. While many would like the Norwegian to play at right-back, with the lack of depth in the heart of defence, it is unlikely that he will be featuring anywhere else for the foreseeable future.

Co-incidentally, as reported by Wales Online, Filip Benkovic’s loan spell at Cardiff City has also been cut short after he made just one appearance for them in the Championship. Leicester City want to get the best out of their player and will be looking to find him a club where he will feature regularly.

Celtic could very well be that club. Other than Ajer, they have Shane Duffy, Hatem Abd Elhamed, Nir Bitton and Stephen Welsh, who are capable of playing at centre-back. It is safe to say that none of them would be exciting choices with many even calling for Duffy to be sent back already.

Thus, it would make a lot of sense for them to try and get the Croatian defender on loan for the rest of the season. The Hoops already know what he is about having already made 27 appearances in a previous loan spell and it might be time for a reunion.

He might not have played a lot of football recently, having featured for just 70 minutes for Cardiff City but when fit, we know that he can be an asset for the club. With his contract with Leicester City running out in the summer of 2023, he might even be available for a bargain at the end of the season, a move the board should look at as well.
