The Celtic board’s decision following the Glasgow Derby defeat has come under massive criticism from both the fans and the media, and rightfully so.

In their first match of 2021, Celtic’s new year got off to the worst start possible as they collapsed in the second half in a 1-0 loss to the Rangers at Ibrox, virtually ending their hopes of 10IAR.

Celtic were dominant and clearly the better side for the opening 62 minutes, but then Nir Bitton was caught on the wrong side of Alfredo Morelos deep in the final third and brought the Colombian down, allowing Bobby Madden to take the easy decision to send the Israeli off. Eight minutes later the Rangers got the winner despite not having a shot on target, with Callum McGregor scoring an own goal.

While the Hoops played well, they didn’t take their chances while the Rangers got the benefit of a deflection. This loss put them 19 points behind their Glasgow rivals, who are now in dreamland as they look very likely to stop the 10IAR.

Neil Lennon, who has received the backing of Peter Lawwell and the board, will now travel to the bright sunshine of Dubai, where they will spend the coming days until they return for their next fixture against Hibernian.

It has become a bit of a tradition for the two Glasgow giants to travel to Dubai during the winter break, however, to do it in the middle of a pandemic and after such a horrible first half of the season for the Hoops makes this decision highly controversial.

Lennon has claimed that this trip is not a holiday for his side but is an all-business training camp to refresh the squad, which has been met with much criticism. Perhaps the better option would have been to just take a few days off training and return full throttle.

Not only would it be the best thing to do to show solidarity with the supporters, but it would also send a proper message to the players that the current standards of football simply aren’t anywhere near good enough.

Instead, by going to Dubai you receive even more criticism. The best that The Hoops can now hope for the remainder of the season is a Scottish Cup title and securing second place in the league, barring a monumental collapse from Steven Gerrard’s side while Celtic do not slip up even once for the remainder of the season.
