The Premier League midfielder is reportedly keen on joining Celtic and the club is also ‘working hard’ to bring him to Parkhead.

It is clear that the Celtic squad needs some reinforcements when January rolls around and the transfer market opens once again. The club have suffered a disappointing start to their 10IAR campaign and will need to find a way to turn things around.

One area that has been a worry for the Hoops this season has been their midfield. With Scott Brown getting up their in terms of age and the few others underperforming, things just have not clicked for them. And it looks like they have identified Crystal Palace’s James McCarthy as the man who can solve those problems.

As reported by Eurosport, the club are working hard to find a way to bring him to Parkhead in January:

"Celtic need new life and purpose injected into their squad in 2021 and the club are working hard on a recruitment plan to land James McCarthy. They have long-admired the Crystal Palace midfielder and feel his style of play and enthusiasm could help invigorate the side, who currently trail Rangers by 16 points.McCarthy grew up as a Celtic supporter and is aware of the interest. Sources say he would be keen on the move as he is currently not figuring for Palace in the Premier League."

McCarthy grew up as a Celtic supporter. And with him out of the picture at Crystal Palace, it is not hard to understand why he would be interested in a move. But everyone will remember how things turned out when they completed a similar kind of deal in the summer.

One has to question the need for central midfielder at the club right now though. They seem to have fixed the midfield issue since the emergence of Ismaila Soro and David Turnbull. Both have done very well over the past few weeks and deserve to hold on to their place in the team. There are also multiple other options in the position right now.

McCarthy won’t come cheap either despite the fact that he is no longer a starter for Crystal Palace. And he is expected to demand some very high wages as well.

As a result, the Hoops would be better served looking to bring in reinforcements in positions that need their immediate attention. Centre-back, right-wing and goalkeeper come to mind.
