After Dean Henderson and Jesse Lingard, Celtic have been linked with a loan move for another Manchester United star in the January transfer window.

It has been a regular feature of the Celtic rumour mill over the course of the past few months. First, it was Dean Henderson who was linked with the Hoops as he was not getting enough chances at Old Trafford and there was a clear need for a new goalkeeper at Parkhead at the time with both Vasilis Barkas and Scott Bain. That issue might have been solved though with the emergence of Conor Hazard.

Another player that Neil Lennon’s side was linked with was Jesse Lingard. The former England international has completely fallen out of favour under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and clearly needs a change of scenery to revive his career. Thus, Parkhead was touted as a possible destination for him as well.

And now Phil Jones is another Manchester United player who the Hoops are reportedly keeping tabs on. As reported by 90 Min, Celtic have asked to be kept informed of the situation although they have a lot of competition from other Premier League clubs as well.

Once a regular for the Red Devils, Jones is nowhere near the first-team picture right now. With his contract running till 2023 and a permanent transfer unlikely at this stage, the club are open to letting him leave on loan as it will at least take a chunk of his salary out of their massive wage bill.

Jones is currently on a reported £75,000-per-week. And it is unlikely that the Hoops will even entertain the idea of paying someone anything near that salary. But if United are ready to take the lion’s share of the burden then a move could be on the cards.

There is no doubt that Celtic do requite another centre-back. Shane Duffy has struggled massively this season while Christopher Jullien has struggled with injury issues. And with Hatem Abd Elhamed looking likely to leave, they will need to bring in another man capable of playing in the heart of defence. But even then it is very unlikely that that man will be Phil Jones if you ask us.
