Celtic have been handed a Fraser Forster transfer boost as it looks likely that they’ll try to sign a new goalkeeper in January.

After a brilliant season on loan at Parkhead, it was expected that Fraser Forster would come back to Celtic for at least another season with 10IAR up for grabs. The Hoops had apparently even managed to agree another loan deal with Southampton as well but things fell through when the player himself decided to reject the chance.

At that point of time, it was believed that he had a chance of breaking into the Southampton first-team. There were also rumours that he could be handed a chance to move to Chelsea, who had their own issues between the posts.

As it turns out though, neither of them has happened. Southampton have made a brilliant start to the season and Forster has not even managed a single appearance. On the other hand, his move to Stamford Bridge is off the table as well as Chelsea have already signed Edouard Mendy.

And The Scotsman’s Andrew Smith believes that this could open up the door for a return to Parkhead. As cited by Celts Are Here, he wrote:

"“It is believed Forster felt there was a chance Chelsea would snap him up for an understudy role. That ship has now sailed, as has any sense Ralph Hasenhüttl considers the former Celtic man a strong rival to his No.1 Alex McCarthy. Forster hasn’t played a minute of competitive action this season, not even when Brentford rolled around in the League Cup.“The hulking keeper might then be far more open to a move that would practically guarantee him concerted game time for the next five months.”"

Vasilis Barkas was brought in for a reported transfer fee of around £4.5 million from AEK Athens. He has failed to justify that investment till now though. It would be wrong to put all the blame on his shoulders considering how bad the Celtic defence has been as well. But the Greek international has not shown much to suggest that he can do the job between the sticks for the foreseeable future.

Scott Bain has not looked very convincing either. Yes, he has pulled off a couple of penalty saves but overall, he has never looked like someone who can be a regular starter for the Hoops.

Now, it is understandable why certain fans would not want the club to take back Forster. After all, he rejected the chance when the offer was at the table. But right now, it is about doing what is best for the club. And bringing Forster back would be exactly that.
