Neil Lennon’s latest comments about his Celtic team’s performances lately just go on to show exactly where things are going wrong.

It has been quite a while since Celtic put in a decent performance. The fans have had to be satisfied with 10 or 20 minutes of good football here and there. As a result, it is no surprise that they have managed just two wins from their last eleven games.

Naturally, questions have been raised about the future of Neil Lennon at Parkhead. But somehow, the manager has manager has managed to keep his job till now. It looks like only a matter of time though before the board are forced to show him the exit door though.

The Hoops have lost three straight games and you’d have to think that anything other than a win against St. Johnstone will be the end of the road for Lennon. But then again, we have been saying that for a long time now and in each instance he has managed to survive.

What is one of the most frustrating things about this entire situation is Lennon’s own attitude towards it. He has continued to make promises about how the side are on the verge of a turning point only for them to slump to one defeat after the other.

His latest comments after the AC Milan defeat seemed bizarrely optimistic for a manager whose side have lost six of their last eleven games. As reported by the Glasgow Times, he said:

"“I know it’s all about perspective and I don’t want to sound like a happy clapper, either.“But I don’t think we are a million miles away from being a real force again and a good side.“We’ve had a few hiccups to sort out and settle down defensively, but, overall, I’ve got to be pleased with what I got in Milan in terms of quality of performance.“I think we lacked a little bit of physicality in certain moments. That’s all. We need to tackle better and we need to do the dirty bits of the game better.”"

Let’s be honest, we are nowhere near out best at the moment and have not been for the entirety of the season. The players just don’t look good enough at the moment and that is being reflected in the results.

But Lennon has continued to claim how we are set to turn things around for a long time now. All he has had to back up these claims are a few decent periods in certain games.

This is not a bad run of three or four games though. It has been eleven games already. That is one-fifth of the season. And in probably the most important season in the club’s history since 1967.

The fact that rumours continue to swirl around that the board were set to give Lennon the sack if not for the protests outside Parkhead after the defeat against Ross County have not helped things either.

Now, there is no denying the fact that Lennon is a club legend, both as a player and a manager. But the longer the board push back his sacking, the more it will hurt his image in the eyes of the fans. Nobody wants to be remembered as the man who failed to win us 10IAR.
