The real reason why Neil Lennon still has not been sacked by Celtic despite their disastrous run of results has been revealed.
It is no secret that Celtic need to make some changes if they are to turn their season around. Over the last 10 games, they have managed to win just twice. Safe to say that is unacceptable. Yet Neil Lennon still finds himself in the managerial hot-seat when people before him have been let go of for far less.
Obviously, Lennon being a club legend goes a long way. Over his time as both player and manager, he has won 10 league titles for the Hoops. But at this point of time, it looks inevitable that he will be sacked sooner or later. So why are the board pushing back the inevitable?
The reason behind that appear to be the protests that took place outside of Celtic Park after the club’s humiliating 2-0 defeat at the hands of Ross County that ended their 35-game unbeaten streak in domestic cup competitions and saw them crash out of the Scottish League Cup in the second round.
Daily Record has reported that the protests have only strengthened Dermot Desmond’s will to give Lennon another chance to turn things around as he is unwilling to bow to fan support:
"“Dermot Desmond is simply not the kind of man who will be dictated to by a hate mob – if anything what went on after the game on Sunday has strengthened his resolve to give Neil another chance to turn things around.“It’s obviously been a terrible run of results for the manager but last Friday, despite the Europa League defeat against Sparta Prague, Dermot was absolutely unequivocal in his support for Neil. Yes, the defeat to Ross County was a bad one but the reaction to it was even more unacceptable as far as Dermot is concerned.“Neil knows he can’t go on losing games indefinitely but he will also not be thrown to the wolves just because of the demands of a bunch of fans with an enormous sense of entitlement.”"

Now this is a sticky situation. On one hand, what happened outside out Parkhead was totally unacceptable. And if Lennon is sacked after that, it will set a bad precedent. In the future, when we find ourselves in a difficult situation, there could be violence once again.
But on the other hand, it is clear that there needs to be a change of manager. Judging by the recent performances, it certainly looks like some of the players have already downed their tools and if that is indeed the case then the club have no other option but to sack the manager. Desmond is just pushing back the inevitable here.
The next game is against AC Milan away at the San Siro. The game is meaningless for the Hoops as they are already out of the competition. But a heavy defeat could spell the end of Lennon’s reign.
