Former Celtic star Scott McDonald has dropped a hint about John Kennedy’s Parkhead future in case Neil Lennon gets sacked.

John Kennedy has been a part of Celtic for a long time now. He made his first-team debut for the club at the age of 16 and spent 10 years here as a player until his career was tragically cut short when he was just 26 due to continuous injuries.

He would then go on to become a scout for the club before starting his coaching career at Parkhead. Since then, he has been a part of three Celtic regimes under Ronny Deila, Brendan Rodgers and now Neil Lennon.

There are questions about his future at the club now though with Lennon in danger of being shown the exit door himself after a poor start to the season. But Scott McDonald does not believe that the club will let Kennedy go even if the manager is sacked.

Speaking to the Huddle Podcast and as cited by 67 Hail Hail, the Australian said:

"“No, he doesn’t go (along with Lennon).“There’s obviously a plan in place for John. He’s worked under several managers and is more or less part of the furniture now and the club believes in John. That’s evident and that’s why he’s been put in the role that he’s in now.“If you’re asking me if he’s going to be the next Celtic manager, I don’t believe so at this moment in time. I do believe though, if everything had gone well this year, I still probably saw Neil leaving after Ten. I didn’t think that he could continue thereafter.”"

At this point of time it is very unlikely that he will be the next Celtic manager although the possibility would have been there if Lennon would have left after successfully leading the club to a historic 10IAR. But it is equally unlikely that the Hoops will let him go altogether.

He has been a first of the setup for over two decades and the board clearly value him considering the fact that he has managed to survive so many years at such a demanding club in various roles. But if or when the club do end up bringing a new manager, will Kennedy still be the assistant manager?

There is certainly a discussion to be had there and probably depends on the man they hire to be manager. If it is someone high profile like Eddie Howe, he would most probably demand to bring in his own backroom staff, which could see Kennedy move back into the role of first-team coach. Only time shall tell though.
