The former star questioned Neil Lennon’s credentials to be Celtic manager after the club’s disastrous form in recent months.

It is no secret that Celtic are in desperate need of some change. The club are in the middle of one of their worst runs of form in recent memory, winning only two out of their last ten games. And naturally, Neil Lennon’s future as manager is in danger. In fact, many would argue that the Hoops have made a mistake by not showing him the exit door already.

Unfortunately, Charlie Nicholas does not have a lot of nice things to say about the club these days anyways. And after his public spat with Lennon earlier in the season, it was expected that he would not miss the opportunity to call the manager out considering how bad the side have been in the last couple of months.

Nicholas has questioned Lennon’s credentials to be handed the Celtic job and has claimed that it was only given to him because it was convenient, not because he had earned it.

As reported by the Daily Record, he said:

"“Neil is a lucky, lucky boy to have had the privilege to manage Celtic on two occasions.“On the first occasion, he didn’t earn it. He got it on the back of Tony Mowbray being sacked.“Mowbray had been made promises by the Celtic board, who are also under scrutiny now, and they reneged on them.“That board didn’t deliver and then turned to Lenny, ironically after a Ross County defeat.“He did a fine job and he got them off and running towards nine-in-a-row but it was never the most taxing job in the world.“Also, when Neil came back, he didn’t earn the right to become Celtic manager.“Neil is an old-fashioned manager and a Martin O’Neill-type, who will let his coaches get on with things. The problem that has been growing for me – and I have said it before – is the cheapness and the way Celtic go about things.”"

While he might be struggling badly at the moment, it is unquestionable that Lennon has delivered trophies over the years. Yes, there have been those who have always questioned his ability as a manger. But that has not stopped him from succeeding.

Like all things in football, managers also have their shelf life. And it is time for the club to move him on. But that does not make everything that he has achieved in the past meaningless.

And to be very honest, Lennon is not the only problem at the club right now. Judging by their recent performances, one has to question whether certain players have already downed their tools. Of course, if that is indeed the case then the board have no other option but to sack the manager.

Nicholas’ comments are extremely harsh. But then, he probably knows that as well and is just looking for a few headlines.
