The report claims that there is a clause in Shane Duffy’s Celtic contract which might see him leave Parkhead as early as January.

It is safe to say that things have not gone according to plan since Shane Duffy’s arrival at Celtic. He had proven himself to be a capable defender in the Premier League while playing for Brighton and Hove Albion. And when he joined the club, many expected him to cruise through Scottish football and be the best defender in the league. The reality has been very different.

After a good start to his career in the Hoops that saw him score twice in his first two games for the club, things started to fall apart soon. His lack of speed and passing ability were exposed in a team that has the ball most of the time instead of sitting back. And at times, he has just looked like a mistake waiting to happen at the back.

All things considered, it might be time to admit that the scouts got it wrong and Duffy is not the right fit for this system. The fact that he did not play much football last season surely did not help things either.

By the Republic of Ireland international’s own admission, Celtic are paying his entire salary, which is reported to be as high as a staggering £40,000 per week. Thus, it is safe to say that he has not delivered on the board’s faith in him. And it looks like they are not planning to hold on to him for much longer.

An exclusive report from Video Celts claims that there is an option in his contract which the club officials have already decided to exercise and he will be sent back to Brighton and Hove Albion in January. Truth be told, it is a smart move on the part of the Hoops to have the clause in Duffy’s contract if the report is indeed accurate.

If that does indeed happen though, the board must be prepared to splash out in January. There is a dearth of good defenders at the club right now. That has been evident even when Duffy is not playing. And they need someone to take a commanding role at the heart of defence.
