The former Celtic star and coach has admitted that he is keen on returning to the club in the near future if the opportunity presents itself.

It is no secret that Celtic have struggled to find their best form this season and already find themselves chasing the Rangers in the Premiership. And a lot of the blame has fallen on the shoulders of Neil Lennon. His tactics and ability to motivate the players have been questioned after the Hoops’ poor start to their historic 10IAR campaign.

The backroom change over the summer is something that has not gotten much attention though. Damien Duffy moved on to become the Republic of Ireland assistant manager after it had initially appeared that he would be juggling both roles. Gavin Strachan, son of former Celtic manager Gordon Strachan, was brought in as his replacement.

And while it would be wrong to point towards this as the reason for the club’s downturn in form, it is undeniable that Duff was very highly rated as a coach.

One man that the fans would have expected to bring in when Duff left though was Johan Mjallby. And it looks like he would not have been opposed to the move either.

As reported by The Celtic Huddle, he said:

"“Yeah, of course, I miss the buzz and working for one of the finest clubs in the world. I miss the competitive edge of it.“But I think Neil is quite happy with his backroom staff, to be honest with you. He knows what I would bring, he knows what I stand for, so we might work together in the future, you never know.”"

The history between the two is well documented. The two were teammates during their playing careers at Parkhead and then the Swede would go on to be his assistant manager during Lennon’s first spell as Celtic manager, spending four years working for the Hoops and winning multiple trophies together.

In fact, Mjallby would even follow Lennon to Bolton Wanderers although they would go there separate ways following that and have not reunited since.

Many fans had expected that to happen ahead of 10IAR campaign considering the Swede’s vast experience at the club both as a player and then as an assistant manager. But Lennon ended up choosing Strachan. And we can only hope that the move pays off the in the long-term.
