Celtic boss Neil Lennon gave an worrying injury update about Jeremie Frimpong after he was on the end of a terrible tackle against Motherwell.

Jeremie Frimpong has been one of the few bright spots in a season that has produced more negatives than positives for Celtic. But it looks like the club will now be sweating about the Dutchman as well as he had to come off with an injury against Motherwell.

Frimpong was on the end of a terrible tackle from Motherwell’s Devante Cole. The right-back tried to run it off but had to be ultimately replaced.

It was an awful challenge which saw Cole go studs first and the contact was on the side of his leg, right above his knee. There was no way to justify anything but a red card yet the referee somehow just ended up producing a yellow card.

The bigger worry for Celtic right now though will be Frimpong’s condition as Neil Lennon had a worrying update. As reported by Herald Scotland, the manager said:

"“It could be ligament damage, we don’t know yet. We will have to assess him over the next couple of days.”"

If that is indeed the case then it will be a huge worry for the Hoops. Truth be told, Frimpong has been one of the few players who has put in consistent performers this season and has established himself as a regular starter for the club even at his young age. And with the terrible start that they have made, they cannot afford any long-term injuries to key players.

Fortunately, they have able backup in the form of Hatem Abd Elhamed who came in as a late substitute and made his mark with an assist. And if Frimpong is missing for any considerable length of time, he can be expected to provide good cover.

Let’s hope though that we don’t have to find out if he can and the Dutchman is back on the pitch as soon as possible.
