Celtic’s terrible luck this season seems to have no end as the highly-rated youngster picked up an injury while way on loan.

Celtic players have had their injury worries this season, which is not surprising considering the rigorous schedule that they have to go through, playing once every three days. But it looks like it is just not players at the club who are struggling with their fitness.

Jonathan Afolabi was signed last season after he was let go off by Southampton after coming though their youth ranks. He failed to break into the Celtic first-team though and was sent out on loan Dunfermline Athletic, where he made an impressive start, scoring twice in just 6 appearances. But before he could build on that, the season was cut short due to the global pandemic.

This time around he has been sent out on loan to Dundee and has appeared to impress the manager there as well, scoring a winner on his very first start for them. But now he has suffered another setback.

Afolabi was forced to come back just 40 minutes into Dundee’s 3-3 draw against Alloa as he was injured while making a tackle. While there has been no word yet on the severity of the problem, it does look like an issue with his ankle or foot.

At this point of time, we can only hope that it is not a serious one and he can get back to playing as soon as possible. The Hoops have already had to deal with one of their players returning from loan as Ryan Mullen was injured while away at Cove Rangers and was sent back in order to rehabilitate.

One can only hope that the same fate does not await Afolabi. He was one of the most highly-rated prospects while playing for the youth side last season and is eventually expected to make a jump into the senior squad. Any long term injury will push that back considerably though.
