Celtic reportedly failed with a move for the Chelsea youngster in the summer transfer window as he ended up joining a League One side instead.

It is no secret that Celtic were in dire need of a left-back in the recently closed transfer window. Jonny Hayes was allowed to walk out earlier before Boli Bolingoli took that ill-fated trip to Spain in the middle of the pandemic without informing anyone and then played against Kilmarnock when he should have been quarantining instead.

As a result, the club were almost forced to send the Belgian left-back out on loan. As a result, Neil Lennon was left with only Greg Taylor in the position. And while the Scot has not been terrible, he has not impressed either. It is clear that he is not at the level right now to start for Celtic every week.

As a result, they were linked with a number of players to fill in the hole at left-back. And one of them appears to be 18-year-old Chelsea prospect, Ian Maatsen.

The Dutch youngster has represented the Netherlands national team at multiple youth levels although he is yet to feature for the senior team. He is also very highly-rated at Chelsea and made his debut for Frank Lampard’s side last season in the League Cup.

And as reported by the Daily Mail, Celtic were interested in acquiring his services when they were in search of a new left-back before ultimately signing Diego Laxalt. Maatsen on the other hand ended up moving to Charlton Athletic on loan to gain some first-team experience.

That could ultimately end up favouring Celtic though as they were also linked with the League One side’s highly-rated youngster Alfie Doughty. And with his contract running down, Charlton have only one chance left to cash in on him or look set to lose him for free.
