The former Celtic manager has advised the Rangers about making a signing that he believes would help them stop 10IAR.
It is rare for anyone associated with Celtic to give any advice to their Glasgow rivals. Of course, not everybody has had a positive experience at Parkhead. As a result, some of them do end up going against the grain at times. John Barnes is certainly one of those people.
Perhaps the odds were stacked against him from the very beginning as he was the Celtic managerial job immediately after hanging up his boots. In fact, he even registered himself as a player at Parkhead although he never made a competitive experience. 8 losses in his first 29 games in charge meant that he was gone inside just 8 months.
In hindsight, Celtic did take the right decision. Kenny Dalglish led them to a League Cup after taking over till the end of the season. And Martin O’Neill was appointed as manager the following season. We will know how that went.
Barnes though clearly felt that he was let go unfairly and these days, he hardly has many good things to say about the Hoops. In fact, he had some advice for the Rangers in how to prevent Celtic from securing a historical 10IAR. And that involves free agent Jack Wilshere.
As reported by the Glasgow Times, Barnes said:
"“I believe Jack Wilshere would be a great signing for Rangers; it’d really could be the perfect club for him.“With a number of injuries throughout his career, at Rangers he’d have an understanding manager in Steven, someone he knows personally, who’d allow him to stay fit and most importantly, to play.“Jack would bring a lot to the table; he’s creative in his play and he’s hungry. He really wants to get back out there and have a lot to give. He’s definitely one to watch. Perhaps someone like Wilshere could help Rangers prevent Celtic from getting their 10-in-a-row. Time will tell.”"

Once upon a time, Wilshere was one of the most highly-rated talents in the world. His career has not gone as planned though and he finds himself without a club at the age of 28. And with his history of injuries, it is unlikely that many sides would be willing to match the £100,000 per week he was being paid by West Ham United.
The Rangers certainly do not have that kind of money and while the newspapers continue to link him with a move to Ibrox, it is unlikely that he will choose a move to Steven Gerrard’s side for a massive pay cut instead of just going to somewhere like China or the MLS.
And even if my some chance he did join the Ibrox side, it would be interesting to see how he performs in Scotland and how long he manages to remain fit after not having played much football in recent times.
