At the moment, the defense of Celtic seems to be the focus point of the January window.

However, it seems that more defenders are rumored to leave then come in. Everybody and their grandmother knows that Mikael Lustig and Erik Sviatchenko might not be in Paradise at the end of the window. Now, it appears another piece of the defense is heading out as well.

Reports have claimed that Premier League side Burnley have cashed in on the services of Jozo Simunovic. The bid is rumored to come around 6.5 million pounds which is almost double his market value, according to Transfermarkt.

If the reports are true, that will leave the Hoops very depleted at the back with three defenders supposedly heading out. Fans can make it four considering that Marvin Compper can not play in the Europa League for the Celts this season.

Simunovic comes as one of Celtic’s younger defenders at the age of 23, so selling him seems to be bit odd. The native of Bosnia and Herzegovina hasn’t featured much with the Bhoys this season; he’s only played in 8 of the 22 contests in the Scottish Premiership thus far.

Simunovic did play in four Champions League fixtures however, and posted 3 tackles with a sublime 94 pass success rate.

Burnley seems like the perfect fit for Simunovic at the moment. Sean Dyche‘s side plays a heavy defensive game where draws seem to be perfectly decent for the club. The side at Turf Moor have produced a plethora of talent at the back, and they’ll definitely need more for the second half of the EPL.

Celts Are Here provided some opinion as to why this deal seems to be a bit “ludicrous” on Celtic’s end:

"Celtic were lacking defensive depth before this window, yes, they have brought Marvin Compper in but to potentially sell two defenders in this window seems ludicrous.Unless the Celtic scouting team has someone in mind to come in and head straight into the starting XI it just wouldn’t make any sense to ship Jozo and Erik out."

The selling of defenders is really concerning at the moment, especially since Celtic don’t seem to be linked with anybody right now. The Bhoys did get their extra 7.5 million pounds as Virgil van Dijk moved to Liverpool.

Brendan Rodgers and the rest of the Hoops’ board should consider using that money wisely before it’s too late.
