Scottish football may not be at its tip-top, but the big named clubs should be good to go in the revamped Betfred Cup.
Apparently no one told Hearts about that assumption and it has led many to believe manager Ian Cathro is in some serious trouble.
You see, Hearts were dumped out of the Betfred Cup thanks to a 2-2 draw with Dunfermline on Saturday afternoon. The draw meant Dunfermline and Peterhead advanced out of their group and the Premiership side is bounced.
Given the draw and the rules of the Betfred Cup, Hearts had to endure even more embarrassment thanks to a penalty shootout that meant nothing at all. But, it did mean something to the fans, who turned on Hearts manager Ian Cahtro in a major way.
When you have supporters booing you off the pitch and the SPL season hasn’t even started. According to the report from the Daily Record, Cathro heard it all penalty shootout long from some in the crowd, while the whole lot were booed off the pitch for their lack of advancement in the Betfred Cup.

Embarrassing to say the least, troublesome for the manager for sure.
Add in a dash of Celtic being your opening match and well… some would call that a major problem. It isn’t as if Celtic have demolished Hearts all of last season and are looking in fine form thanks to some youngsters stepping up and a loaded midfield of attacking players.
I’m sure the board wouldn’t do anything rash…oh wait, this is football we’re talking about…so, Cathro better be worried over his job. With Hearts finishing a disappointing fifth and 12 points behind fourth place St. Johnstone, Cathro was already in deep trouble with some of the support.
Now he’s only added fuel to the fire before the SPL season even gets underway.
We’ll see if Cathro falls on the sword himself and resigns or if the Hearts board sacks him. It certainly isn’t a good look for a club trying to re-establish itself as a player in the top division.
Just when you think Scottish football couldn’t get any more crazy…it surprises you again. So, hold on for what is likely to be a wild ride through the upcoming year.
