Celtic have begun to take their women’s squad a lot more serious over the past few years. That increased commitment has begun to pay off with some quality overseas players becoming interested in donning the Hoops.
With the manager becoming full-time, a dedication to better staffing overall and a move to K-Park Training Academy on a full-time basis, Celtic’s women’s club is being set up for future success as well.
It is part of the reason why American talent has become attracted to the Ghirls side. On Tuesday, Celtic introduced a pair of American signings in Jaclyn Poucel and Darcy McFarlane.
Poucel comes to Celtic after stints in Finland and Iceland following her graduation from the University of Pittsburgh. The defender has previously played for Nice Futis in Finland and IA Akranes in Iceland over the last three years.
McFarlane is a big time get for the women’s side, coming directly from American soccer power North Carolina Tar Heels. Here university side has produced some of the best talent the United States Women’s National Team has had to offer in the past three decades or so.

After graduating in December, McFarlane has gotten familiar with her new side. She has played in two matches already and earned player of the game honors in her first match according to the team’s website.
There also was an announcement of a back-of-shirt sponsor for the Ghirls, who will see Eden Mill St. Andrew sign on for one-year of sponsorship of the women’s side.
It should be a familiar sponsor for those who have been to Paradise this season, as the distillery and brewery have been sponsoring signage around Celtic Park all season long. The additional money will be helpful in continuing to upgrade the professional set up of the women’s side.
Even Craig Gordon is getting in to the women’s game, and he was on hand to help welcome the new additions and new sponsor to the Celtic family.
“It is fantastic that our women’s team has been able to attract such a prestigious sponsor,” said Gordon, via the club’s website.
“I’ve worked with some of the team myself, I know how committed the players are and I know that the club’s objective is to continue to grow and develop the team even further.
“Today’s great announcement shows the interest there is in women’s football and also the level of ambition we have for our team.”
All are welcome additions to the growing success of the women’s team at Celtic FC. Currently they are heading to the semi-final’s of the women’s League Cup and are third on 4 points after two matches in league play.
