Celtic is a club rich in tradition and historic significance, but as the Green Brigade reminded us the present isn’t too bad either.

After a 4-0 win over Hearts, the Bhoys of today now hold the club record with 27 straight unbeaten in domestic play to start the season. It surpasses the mark of the famed 1966-67 Lisbon Lions side just as the club is in the middle of celebrating the 50th anniversary of that side.

Today’s Celtic seem nearly as unstoppable as that ’67 side did, and lately it has come from unexpected sources. An injury to Stuart Armstrong in pre-game warmups saw Callum McGregor get a rare start, only to made the most of that opportunity.

After probing and looking dangerous for most of the first 25 minutes of the match, things finally opened up for the Bhoys.

McGregor was put through by a great ball from Scott Sinclair and bounced one off the opposite post and in to the back of the net for a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute.

The young midfielder continued to look dangerous throughout the rest of the match and certainly didn’t look out of place in the attacking lineup that Celtic had on the day.

McGregor wasn’t the only non-regular to look impressive on the day either, but it was the familiar combination of Kieran Tierney and Scott Sinclair that scared Hearts for most of the match. After constant pressure in the second half, Sinclair was finally able to get on the end of one of the multiple quality crosses fed in to the box by Tierney.

More from The Celtic Bhoys

The young left back crossed a low one in to the six-yard box and after a Hearts defender nearly put one in his own net it was Sinclair pouncing on the free ball to put the Hoops up 2-0 in front of a few members of that famed ’67 side.

If there was any doubt that Celtic were going to set the club record for the longest unbeaten streak in domestic play, it ended shortly after that as Patrick Roberts, who had himself an active and impressive match, sealed the deal thanks to another Tierney cross.

This time instead of smashing one, Tierney calmly picked out Roberts inside the box and he smashed it one-time to give the Bhoys a 3-0 lead in the 80th minute.

It certainly was an impressive result and scoreline for Celtic, especially without its main goal-scoring threats of Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths out injured at the moment.

Celtic’s defense may not have been tested as much as Hearts were defensively, but Craig Gordon showcased why he is important to the club with a spectacular save that kept the score 1-0 in the second half.

Things could’ve been very different had that Hearts effort gone in in the 71st minute.

But, no matter as the Bhoys answered that shaky moment by burying Hearts with three goals in the the final 13 minutes of the match.

Even subs like Jack Aitchinson got in on this effort, earning a penalty which Sinclair buried for the final 4-0 result and his brace on the day.

History was honored by the fans during the match, but it was also being made on the pitch at the same time.

All of it being done without the likes of Armstrong, Dembele, Griffiths and Tom Rogic available. The rest of Scotland must be afraid, very afraid. Celtic are also now 22 points clear of Sevco in second place with both on 22 matches played in the Scottish Premiership.
