It would be unfair to expect Wilfried Nancy to implement all his ideas within days of becoming the Celtic manager. But the reality of the matter is that he has walked into one of the most demanding jobs in football. The fact that he has done so without any prior experience of managing in Europe means that the microscope is even larger on him.
Nancy was excellent during his time in the MLS. That being said, managing Celtic is a whole different ball game. And whether you agree with the expectations of having to win every domestic game or not, you have to learn to live with them.
Nancy insisted that he is "not about losing or winning" following his side's loss against Hearts. That is the last thing that Celtic fans want to hear. Good performances are well and good, but wins are the most important currency at Parkhead.
That was pretty much the message from Charlie Mulgrew to Nancy after the result. As reported by CeltsAreHere, he said on The Breakdown:
"His interview, it’s not about winning or losing, it’s about performances, sorry Wilfred you’re in the wrong city."
'You’re in the wrong city' - Wilfried Nancy sent reality check by Celtic hero
Mulgrew will know all about the pressure of life at Celtic as a player. He came through the club's youth system and although he did not make the senior grade the first time around, he did return later to win five league titles with the Hoops and was also PFA Scotland's Players' Player of the Year on one occasion.
Celtic fans will be hoping that Nancy succeeds at the club, no matter whether they agree with the decision to appoint him or not. That being said, the early signs have raised some concerns among the fanbase and understandably so.
It is very clear that Nancy is coming in from a very different league and football culture, where the expectations are vastly different from what he will find at Celtic. The quicker he adjusts to them, the better his chances of success.
