In the aftermath of that late, late Celtic win at Motherwell, the focus turns to Saturday. The title-decider at Parkhead against Hearts is a winner-takes-all game. Fortunately for Celtic defender Liam Scales, some early fan doubts about his availability were quickly quashed.
It was such a momentous win for Celtic over Motherwell. At various points, it looked as if the title was slipping out of reach. But the Bhoys don’t give up easily and again hunted down a late goal. One that will be debated for a long time, too.
The penalty debate will rage on. While people try to explain why a handball in the box isn't a penalty, maybe they could also take a look at that Daizen Maeda first-half penalty claim, too. A knee in the back and being flattened by a keeper should have had a spot kick, too, surely?
Celtic fans question mark over Liam Scales booking
While pundits claim all sorts of conspiracies, Celtic fans have different issues to consider as they look forward to Saturday. One being whether Liam Scales’ yellow card in the 91st minute meant a suspension. It was his 12th booking of the season.
That does mean a two-match suspension for Scales. But all is not as bad as that might seem. Suspensions don’t kick in for seven days afterwards, meaning Scales should remain available for Saturday’s crucial match.
Wednesday night wasn't his best game this season by any means, but he has been a powerhouse in defence and would have been a huge miss for such a big game. Fortunately that's not looking an issue for now, the suspension will likely apply next season instead.
Celtic look ahead to two massive matches for a season end
The Scottish Cup Final against Dunfermline is though within that time frame. But there is more good news for Scales and Celtic fans. The totting up of yellow cards is for league matches. He can still play in cup matches where a separate procedure runs. Meaning that once again, Scales remains available for Martin O’Neill’s cup final squad.
After such a madcap season, it’s coming to quite an amazing conclusion. It was unthinkable at times that Celtic would still be in with a chance of a league title by the final game. A Scottish Cup final looked a dim possibility at times, too, as the side battled against Rangers and St.Mirren in previous rounds. Now there is a distinct possibility of another historic double. Scales and the rest of the squad can take pride in the way they have kept their chances alive.
