Wilfried Nancy is out of depth as Celtic manager. Let's just say it like it is. Four straight defeats to start off your run in the Parkhead hot seat is unheard of in the 137-year history of this football club. Yet, we are certain that the board will not want to admit their mistake in appointing him so quickly and will stick with him for as long as possible. Unfortunately, that could cost the Hoops this entire season as they continue to fall behind the rest of the pack.
Martin O'Neill won seven out of eight games with this same team. Even Brendan Rodgers, even at his worst, was getting results on most days. Nancy can't even get a draw.
He continues to talk about good performances after every defeat. The Frenchman does not seem to realise that this is Celtic Football Club. Winning is a necessity. A double at the end of the season is almost mildly disappointing.
Nancy has not endeared himself to the fans with his comments, either, the least that would have been expected. The latest of those statements is him talking about almost signing for Carlisle, a National League team from England, when asked about whether he had underestimated Scottish football. As reported by The Celtic Way, he said:
"No, no. No, I know Scottish football. I know the way it is. I come from France. I come from Europe. I was close when I was a player to sign with Carlisle.
So, I know exactly where I am. I know that Scottish football, this is physical. I know that there is a lot of intensity. I know that there is a lot of fight. And the referees don't whistle a lot. I know that."
Wilfried Nancy makes clueless comment after fourth straight Celtic defeat
That's a bizarre comparison, to say the least. What does almost signing for a lower league English team as a player have to do with managing the biggest team in Scottish football.
At the end of the day, though, this is down to the board. It was their decision to bring in Nancy even though it is very clear that the club do not have the squad to play the system that he wants. Of course, the Frenchman took the opportunity presented to him. Why wouldn't he?
It is very clear that it was a major faux pas on the part of the board to even consider Nancy for the role. And since they have, now they are trying to postpone the sacking for as long as they can, in hopes that the Frenchman somehow manages to turn things around. But from what we have seen so far, there is very little chance that he will.
