Another Hampden Park final, another failure for Celtic. This time around, it did not even go to penalties. St Mirren were deserving winners on the day, while the Hoops board have a lot of questions to answer. Of course, the top of that list has to be the decision to bring in Wilfried Nancy, who looks completely out of his depth in this job and his comments suggest that he does not understand the magnitude of the task at hand.
Then there is the issue of the timing of the appointment. Nancy was brought in right before a tough and important run of games. And Martin O'Neil's interim run was cut short while he had led the team to victory in seven of the eight games he was in charge of.
Many fans believed that the club were making a naive decision. Those fears have come true. And the pressure is now back on the board.
As reported by 67 Hail Hail, when St Mirren scored their third goal in the final, the cameras panned to Peter Lawwell in the stands. The Celtic chairman put his head down and puffed his cheeks. BBC Sport Scotland commentator Liam McLeod said:
"The TV cameras zoom in on Peter Lawwell, the Celtic chairman.
“He has his face screwed up."
What Peter Lawwell did live on TV during Celtic's final defeat
Perhaps Lawwell was already anticipating the reaction to the result. After all, he has been at Celtic for many years, and while the club have rarely lost finals during that time, when they do, the aftermath is not claps and cheers.
It is very clear what the Celtic fans want. They want major changes to be made at the board level. But it looks like those on it have no intention of leaving. As a result, it has become the supporters and the club chiefs.
The board would have been hoping that Nancy proved to be another Ange Postecoglou, and the fan anger gradually faded away. Instead, he is looking like a worse Russell Martin.
