Three games into his run as the manager of Celtic, the fans have given up on Wilfried Nancy already. Unfortunately, there is a good reason for that. He has lost all three matches in convincing fashion with the latest being the Scottish League Cup final against St Mirren. Yet, Martin O'Neill had won seven out of the eight games he was in charge of, with this same squad of players.
Many had always feared that the board had gotten the timing of the move wrong. O'Neill should have been kept on until the League Cup final, and there is a good chance the result would have been very different.
Now, there are calls for Nancy to be given time and the players that he needs to play his system. But so far, he looks completely out of his depth in this job.
While a large section of the fanbase would like to see him sacked after just three games in charge, Chris Sutton seems to have a different view. And one that not many might agree with. He wrote:
"I feel for Wilfried Nancy he is trying to implement a style but his problem is he has overestimated the level of player at the club right now. To play the way he wants takes tactical intelligence and flexibility and good decision making something this group of players lackā¦"
Chris Sutton slammed by Celtic fans for comments after losing final
So, it appears that Sutton believes that it is down to the group of players and not the manager. Well, it is the same squad that did so well while O'Neill was in charge. And while there is plenty of room for improvement, nobody can claim that Nancy is getting the best out of them at the moment.
As one fan wrote: "Why feel sorry for him? He has come in and tried to change everything the players have been used to and been successful with, without getting to know his players. At least wait to january to get players in you know to then change to the system you want to play."
That is a very good point. Nancy should have waited to have the right players in place before making such significant changes at Celtic. It is unlikely that he will be sacked so soon, but it already feels like it is only a matter of time.
