Former Celtic star Moussa Dembélé has been recalling his achievements at the club. Dembélé was a sensation for the Hoops, scoring 26 goals in 55 league games, and he ultimately bagged the club just shy of £20million when he left for Olympique Lyon in his home country.
Dembélé went on to be a hit there, too, even enjoying a loan spell with Atletico Madrid at one point, winning a LaLiga title, and he has since swapped European football for the Middle-East, joining Al-Ettifaq, scoring 31 goals in 71 games since 2023.
Dembélé was, of course, part of Celtic's double treble-winning team under Brendan Rodgers, and he has had time to look back on that successful run.
Speaking to the Daily Record, he said: I was not surprised by the size of Celtic. I knew about it. I knew about the Derby, of course. And Celtic were playing in the Champions League almost every year when I was younger, so I knew. But, when you see from outside, you don’t really realise. Once you step inside the building, my first word was just: Wow. How massive it is.
“I think we as players, the coaching staff and everyone, we didn’t realise when everything was happening because everything is going fast. You have games every three days. One season finishes in Scotland and the next one starts we start really early because of the Champions League qualifiers.”
The 30-year-old forward added: “You don’t really have the time to sit back and to look back on what you did the previous season. I think when I really realised what we did is when I left Celtic.
“That’s when I really realised that it was a massive achievement as a player and as a team also. I remember it all like yesterday, although I’m not that old to forget!”
Celtic could do with a player like Dembélé currently, or at least the Dembélé of back then.
