As Celtic continue to be linked with wingers and left-backs, one cannot forget that there are other positions on the pitch where they are looking to strengthen as well. One of them is believed to be midfield. Some weeks back, a long list of midfielders had emerged as potential transfer targets for the Hoops. Those rumours have faded away with time.
That does not mean that Celtic are no longer interested in midfielders. And a very interesting option could be easier to sign this summer.
As reported by The Celtic Star, the club have certainly shown an interest in Andy Irving over the past year. The report suggests that if the Hoops test the waters once again this summer, the opportunity to sign the midfielder may be more manageable this time around, floating the idea of a loan with an option to buy.
Irving recently made his national team debut for Scotland. But chances have been few and far between in West Ham United colours. He made 11 appearances for the Hammers last season. So, it could be time for a change this summer.
West Ham United midfielder tipped to make Celtic move
It remains to be seen if Celtic do end up making a move for Irving or not. He is a great talent, there is no doubt about that, and could fit into what the Hoops need right now.
It does look like the Hoops are looking to add some physicality and athleticism to their midfield. In the big games, they have often struggled to control the middle of the park, which is where most such matches are won and lost. The addition of Irving could help with that.
Irving has past experience of Scottish football as well, having come through the ranks at Hearts and had loan spells at Falkirk and Berwick Rangers. He has also played in Austria, Germany and England.
Of course, it is worth pointing out that this is merely a suggestion at this point in time. It might lead to something more substantial at some point in the summer transfer window though.
