Vincent Kompany must have been relieved more than anything else when Alphonso Davies scrambled the ball into the Celtic net deep into added time. It had looked like the game was going to need 30 extra minutes to separate the two sides but that goal made it a 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich winning 3-2 on aggregate.
Celtic were the better team on the night. And if they had taken their chances, they might have even gotten themselves a one-sided victory.
Celtic missed three or four glorious chances in the first half. It was only after the break that they went ahead as Nicolas Kuhn slotted the ball past Manuel Neuer. That is how the scoreline remained until the dying seconds of the match. The Hoops did not get any time to respond to the Bayern Munich equaliser.
One of the substitutions that Kompany made on the night was bringing on Thomas Muller off the bench for the final 24 seconds of the game. He did not even get a touch before the final whistle blew.
Vincent Kompany slammed for shocking decision vs Celtic
This is a decision that Kompany has received some criticism for. Muller is a Bayern Munich icon and perhaps, that sort of cameo would have suited someone else better, not the German World Cup winner.
As reported by Sky Sport, Lothar Matthaus said:
"This is humiliating. It made me sad and I feel sorry for him. I was shocked."
Matthaus further went on to add about the situation:
"Thomas Müller doesn't have to put himself through that. He is one of the greatest and most successful players of all time. So for those few seconds, the coach can take another player. If that is the perspective for the future, then he should do something else. I don't think he enjoyed it. For what? So that he can be credited with another Champions League appearance? I would have felt stupid if I were him."
At the end of the day, the win is what would have mattered most to Bayern Munich. Of course, if things continue like this for Muller, one has to wonder whether he will look for a way out of the Bavarian club in the near future.
As for Celtic, it might not have been a win, but it was a good learning experience for sure. The fans were proud of what they saw from the Bhoys. Hopefully, they will this in the future to progress further in the Champions League.
