Alphonso Davies broke a lot of Celtic hearts when he bundled the ball home late into extra-time against Celtic to make it 1-1 at the Allianz Arena. A draw against Bayern Munich in their backyard is a remarkable result in itself but it was not enough for the Hoops to make it through to the next round of the Champions League as they lost 3-2 on aggregate.
There are a lot of regrets coming out of this tie for Celtic. The missed chances in the first half against Bayern Munich in the second leg. At least a couple of them should have been goals.
Also, the penalty kick that they did not receive in the first leg after Dayot Upamecano appeared to step on Arne Engels' foot inside the box. That could have turned the tie as well.
And coming out of the game, Davies' comments about how the second leg played out are completely off the mark. As reported by Bayern Munich's official website, the left-back said:
"It’s not easy to play so many games, but all in all we defended well. We had a momentary lapse at the back but on the whole we played well. We didn’t give away many chances."
Alphonso Davies' claim after scoring winner vs Celtic is wrong
It would be safe to say that a lot of people would disagree with that view. Bayern Munich did not defend well on the night.
They looked shaky throughout and gave away a number of glorious chances. If Celtic had been more clinical in front of goal, this might have actually turned out to be a one-sided result in favour of the Hoops.
One could argue that Celtic did not press the Bayern Munich defence enough when it was clear that they were having a tough time dealing with the front three. But it is what it is. The Hoops have a lot to be happy about and will hopefully be taking home a lot of lessons as well, which they will put to good use in the future.
