Celtic failed to sign a striker in the winter transfer window despite the fact that they green-lit Kyogo Furuhashi's exit in the middle of the season to join Rennes, a move that has confused many in Scottish footballing circles. That means that Adam Idah is now the club's number one choice up top out of almost nowhere.

There is not much in the name of depth either. Johnny Kenny and Daniel Cummings, two talented but unproven youngsters, are Celtic's cover options for Idah.

Of course, Daizen Maeda might have a thing or two to say about that. Although he has been Celtic's starting winger for quite a few years now, the Japanese international can play as a centre-forward.

He was handed a rare start in that role against Raith Rovers and he took it with both hands, scoring a hattrick to help Celtic into the next round of the Scottish Cup. That must have given Brendan Rodgers something to think about.

On the other hand, it looks like the Hoops are already mapping out their next steps. As reported by Football Insider, Celtic have begun working on a deal to sign Brondby striker Mathias Kvistgaarden in the summer. Rodgers is thought to be unhappy with the club’s failure to land a replacement for Kyogo and is now the driving force behind their efforts to bring in the 22-year-old.

It is believed that Celtic have tried and failed to sign Kvistgaarden multiple times over the years. Convincing Brondby to part ways with their star man was always going to be a difficult task in the middle of the season anyway.

Some rumours have suggested that Brondby might be looking at a transfer fee around £11 million to consider a Kvistgaarden exit. It remains to be seen if Celtic are ready to make an offer of this magnitude.
