Kyogo Furuhashi made an unexpected move this winter. After helping guide Celtic to the knockout phase of the Champions League, he decided to leave the club without playing in it in order to join Rennes, who are currently trying avoid relegation from Ligue 1. One has to wonder whether he did not wait until the summer even if he wanted to depart Parkhea in search of a new challenge.

Celtic have not struggled for goals in the absence of Kyogo, that is for sure. They scored 6 against Dundee FC and then followed it up with 5 vs Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup this weekend.

Of course, they have a much bigger test ahead in the form of Bayern Munich. And they will be without Daizen Maeda on the day.

The Japanese forward seems to have taken the goalscoring mantle from Kyogo lately. He has scored 5 goals in his last 2 appearances for Celtic and made a pretty good case to be the starting striker by scoring a hattrick against Raith Rovers after being handed a rare opportunity in a central role.

As for Kyogo, things might not be going as smoothly as he would have envisioned. He made his debut recently but had only 7 touches of the football in over an hour of action.

Then, in the following game, Kyogo was left as an unused sub on the bench as Rennes won 2-0 against Saint-Etienne. This is not the start to life in France that he would have been hoping for.

Kyogo was a consistent starter for Celtic throughout his time in Glasgow. But now, he is starting from square one in France. It is believed that he wants to play in the next World Cup for Japan, which motivated the move.
