It is safe to say that Celtic are closing in on further success. Just one point separates them from another Premiership title. On the other hand, they are also in the final of the Scottish Cup, where Brendan Rodgers' side will take on Aberdeen. That fixture sure does bring up some happy memories for the manager as well as the supporters.
Celtic enjoyed success in Europe this time around as well. They made it past the first round and were narrowly defeated by Bayern Munich in the knockout phase, 3-2 on aggregate over two legs, including a 1-1 draw at Allianz Arena.
Despite this success, both domestically and in Europe, Celtic's place in the Champions League is not guaranteed next season. They will have to get past the qualification phase to make it to the main round of the competition, something that they have had a hard time doing in recent memory.
Andy Walker seems to believe that the Scottish champions should be given an automatic spot in the Champions League. As reported by 67 Hail Hail, he said on the Go Radio Football Show:
"I just wish UEFA could recognise the Scottish champions, get them into the Champions League.
“I mean, I’m a big fan of English football, but come on, that’s five places now. You get four in Germany, four in Spain, four in Italy, and four in France.
“The Scottish champions, I think, add to the occasion of the Champions League. Some of the nights, some of the sights and sounds that you see in Glasgow when Europe’s elite come to our city, it’s fabulous.
“And I just wish there was an avenue where the Scottish champions, whoever they are, could get straight into the Champions League.
“I think the competition would be better for it."
UEFA slammed for decision that is hurting Celtic in the Champions League
This is something that should have been thought about, especially after the competition was expanded to 36 teams recently. It is the 'Champions League' but somehow, fifth place in the Premier League appears to get more priority over the champions of Scotland, and plenty other leagues around Europe for that matter.
It is what it is though. Celtic's focus should be on getting past the qualification phase next summer and booking their place in the Champions League.
If their performances in Europe this season are anything to go by, they are well capable of that. The issue is, anything can happen at that point in the season.
