The last thing you want in football is for a bad refereeing decision to have an effect on the result of a game. But that is exactly what happened as Celtic lost 2-0 to SC Braga at Parkhead. Admittedly, the Hoops were nowhere near their best on the night and perhaps did not deserve much more for their performance. That being said, perhaps it could have turned out very differently if Kelechi Iheanacho's goal, early in the second half, was not disallowed.
Iheanacho calmly put the ball past the SC Braga goalkeeper to draw Celtic level. But it was ruled out, although there did not seem to be any definitive proof that it had brushed his hand, watching the replays.
So, it is easy to understand why Celtic fans have been left looking for an answer in the aftermath. They might not end up getting one at all though.
As reported by The Scottish Sun, UEFA won't be giving out an explanation. The governing body only publishes the reasons for VAR decisions when it comes to Champions League games, and doesn’t do so for the Europa League or Europa Conference League. As a result, they are not duty-bound to provide the Hoops with an answer, at least publicly.
UEFA make decision about Celtic's disallowed goal vs Braga
Mistakes of this nature simply cannot happen at this level. Fans come to stadiums and switch on the TV to watch goals, not referees making controversial decisions.
It is safe to say that games need to be officiated better. The job of VAR is to make sure that there are as few controversial and questionable decisions but it looks like they are creating new problems instead of providing solutions.
Anyways, all Celtic can do at this point is move on and focus on what lies ahead of them. In this case, it is a game against Motherwell. The Hoops cannot afford to drop any further points, having drawn against Hibernian last weekend, allowing Hearts to move a couple of points ahead of them in the Premiership title race.
