Everybody recognises that Celtic were not good against SC Braga. That being said, nobody can deny that the Kelechi Iheanacho goal, which was disallowed, was a pivotal moment in the game which could have turned the fixture on its head. There did not seem to be much wrong with the strike but then, everybody was left confused when VAR took a long look at it and it was then disallowed.
Naturally, there has been a lot of controversy surrounding the matter. It is easy to understand why. But now, the entire story has taken a U-turn nobody could have seen coming.
All this while, it had looked like it was VAR that had overturned the goal. But if the latest report is accurate, then that might not have been the case. Instead, it was trying to find a way to prove that the ball had not brushed Iheanacho's arm leading up to it.
As reported by The Scottish Sun, German referee Tobias Stieler made the decision to disallow the goal on the pitch. VAR simply didn’t find anything clear and obvious which would send him to the monitor to revise the decision.
Celtic's disallowed goal story takes U-turn nobody saw coming
Well, that is quite the turn of events after debating the need for VAR over the past few days. It looks like the decision might have been made on the pitch instead.
Celtic are believed to be looking for answers about why it was eventually ruled out. After countless replays, there was nothing to suggest that the ball had 'definitely' brushed Iheanacho's arm.
At the end of the day, the goal should have stood. Fans don't come into stadiums to watch multiple video replays and then see a strike chalked off for the home team. Whether it be the ref or VAR, somebody was at fault.
