The transfer window has been quiet so far for Celtic, frustratingly slow in fact. But there are some glimmers of light appearing. It could be even brighter soon if the spotlights shine on Kasper Hogh in a hoops shirt, as is now expected.Â
If that is followed soon after by more positive signing news, the fans will breathe a sigh of relief. They might even start getting excited about the new season. At the moment, any of Mika Baur, Haissem Hassan, or Dinko Horkas could be next to strike a deal. Not to mention a few other possibilities like a return for Greg Taylor being mentioned on socials.Â
Apart from the signings though, there is one more thing the Celtic fans would love to see from their board. Once again, there is a superb opportunity coming up to qualify for the Champions League group stage. The fans would love to see a well-prepared squad in place for the playoff tie.
Celtic may be taking a different approach to the transfer window
Over the years, we have seen players leave at season end, or just before the qualifiers. It also seems as though the Celtic plan has been to try to qualify before making too many signings or bringing in replacements. And only then see who they can afford to strengthen the squad.Â
Memories linger of young players like Adam Montgomery and Dane Murray being dropped into the first team for European qualifiers. Or of Nir Bitton playing at centre-half to fill recruitment and injury gaps. Then there was last season's disastrous draws against Kairat Almaty before losing out on penalties.Â
Could this be the season where Celtic play their cards differently? Camilo Duran is already looking like a regular goal scorer. Hogh and any of the names above would also be seen as strong investments. If that can be matched by keeping the rest of the squad together as it is now until at least those Champions League ties, that could be another significant step.
Celtic need their key players for Champions League ties
Daizen Maeda has already left, and that's fine. He’ll be sorely missed, but his move was well received. Rumours of departures for Arne Engels, Benjamin Nygren and Alistair Johnston have been circulating for a while now. Ideally, Celtic would block any moves until the playoff ties are completed.Â
That would give a stronger depth to the squad for those games. The players should be professional enough to still perform. It may also encourage some of them to remain at Celtic for the campaign ahead. Particularly if the club has been investing heavily in quality signings.Â
The relationship between Celtic fans and the board is pretty poor currently. Signing delays haven’t helped that at all and have piled on the criticisms. A switch like this with top signings in early and a better chance of Champions League football won’t fix that discord. It would, though, be a huge step in the right direction and help show that perhaps the board has been taking note and acting.Â
