What a twist in the tale this has turned out to be! It did feel like something was up after Danny Rohl's name came up more than once in the media despite earlier suggestions that the Rangers were on the verge of appointing Steven Gerrard. And now, it is confirmed. The Liverpool legend will not be returning to take the challenge posed by Celtic and Brendan Rodgers.
To be fair, Gerrard did win only one trophy during his three-plus-year run at Ibrox the last time around. But he did stop Celtic from doing the 10IAR.
That is the result that the Ibrox fans remember, and they have been pushing for Gerrard to return since Russell Martin's sacking was confirmed. And it had looked like it was going to happen as well until this unexpected piece of news has emerged.
As reported by Sky Sports, Gerrard will not return as the manager of the Rangers after he removed himself from the process. He felt the timing wasn't quite right. Both sides agreed to leave the door open for the future.
'Slippy G' - Celtic fans react to Steven Gerrard rejecting Rangers job
That means two things. Firstly, the name of Gerrard will crop up again whenever the next manager is sacked by the Rangers. Secondly, the Ibrox club now find themselves scrambling for option B.
Of course, this is a piece of news that Celtic fans will enjoy. One wrote: "They had the big build up too, even changing their pfp’s to him."
Another Celtic fan brought up the old nickname, as he wrote: "Slippy G being as even more slippery than ever."
It will be interesting to see where the Rangers go from here. Considering how Rohl has been mentioned over the last few days, it looks like he is the one being lined up for the job now.
That being said, is that the kind of appointment that their supporters will be happy with? It does not feel like so considering their initial reaction when the Rohl rumours first broke out.
