When the Rangers' takeover was completed this summer, their fans were left expecting high-profile additions who would transform the squad and help challenge Celtic for the league title. Well, they certainly have made moves in this transfer window but they have not really been big-money ones, mostly depending on loan deals or paying out similar fees as they have in the past.
One of the high-profile names that the Rangers had been linked with all summer is Conor Coady. The 10-cap England international has played for clubs like Liverpool, Wolves, Everton and Leicester City over his career.
It is believed that talks were held to sign him from Leicester City this summer. While he might no longer be in his prime, someone like Coady could have been a good addition for the Rangers and made Celtic fans worry. Well, there is no need for that anymore as the Ibrox club have missed out, again.
As reported by Anthony Joseph, Wrexham have signed Coady for a £2 million transfer fee. He has penned a two-year contract, with the Championship club holding the option to extend it by a further year.
Sky Sports' Anthony Joseph confirms Rangers blow Celtic will love
Of course, this is another blow for the Rangers, and probably a wake-up call for their supporters. Not much has changed despite the change in ownership.
As for Celtic, they have done a great job of allowing the Rangers to close down the gap. The Hoops have moved at a glacial pace when it comes to making signings this summer and their highest fee paid has been the £1.5 million to bring Benjamin Nygren to Parkhead.
That needs to change, and as soon as possible. Celtic need to show a lot more ambition than they are currently. Even Brendan Rodgers has gone public with his thoughts on the matter and clearly wants more to be done.
