A lot of former Celtic players find themselves managing Scottish clubs right now. Scott Brown is the manager of Ayr United while Neil Lennon has put pen to paper on a two-year contract extension with Dunfermline Athletic. Mark Wilson was recently appointed the head coach of Partick Thistle. And now, another former Hoops player has been handed a managerial job in Scotland.
It is not just Celtic that he has a history with though. He is one of the few to have played for both Glasgow giants, having started his career with the Rangers.
We are talking about Steven Pressley here. He left a behind-the-scenes role at Brentford recently and many thought that he would be the perfect candidate to be the pathways manager at Celtic. But instead, he has made an unexpected return to coaching, something that not many people would have predicted, since he has been out of a managerial job since 2019.
Not only that, he will be managing in the Scottish top flight as well. Dundee United announced on the club's official website that Pressley has been appoinetd as their new head coach.
Scottish rivals announce former Celtic player as new manager
It is worth pointing out at this point in time that Pressley was not expected to get this job. Not by a long shot.
In fact, there are two other Celtic heroes who were believed to be ahead of him in the race for the job. That was Brown, and Shaun Maloney.
So, this is a move on the part of Dundee FC that has left many people confused. The club parted ways with Tony Docherty, even though he was able to keep them up and then went on to bring in someone who has been out of management since 2019.
That being said, he does have a decent bit of experience in management. His first role was as a caretaker at Hearts back in 2005, while he was still an active player. Following the end of his playing career, he went on to manage Falkirk, Coventry City, Fleetwood Town, Pafos and Carlisle United. For the past four years, he had been the Coordinator of talent management at Brentford.
