This summer was supposed to be a fresh start for the Rangers after a takeover. And admittedly, they have shown ambition in the summer transfer window, making a ton of signings, while Celtic have been moving at a glacial pace and not really responding to the moves being made across at Ibrox. That has left a lot of fans unhappy and worried.
When it comes to results on the pitch, it feels like the same old Rangers though. After drawing their opening two Premiership games, their chances of making it to the Champions League group phase suffered a blow as well as they lost 3-1 to Club Brugge at Ibrox in the first leg of their tie.
If the Rangers were to make it through, winning at Ibrox was important. But not only did they fail to do that but they also lost in a one-sided contest and were lucky that the scoreline remained at 3-1, after going three goals down in the first 20 minutes.
Admittedly, Celtic have other things to worry about at the moment, namely their own upcoming first leg at home against Kairat Almaty. But the fans surely would have enjoyed the result at Ibrox.
'Sack him' - Rangers fans meltdown after loss that Celtic will love
It appears that a section of the Rangers fans have already given up on Russell Martin and want to see him being shown the exit door, merely months into his run at Ibrox. One wrote: "It’s not too late. Sack him right now."
Another went a step further and wanted the recruitment team gone as well: "Sack the manager and recruitment team."
Some are drawing comparisons with Mick Beale already: "Have Russell Martin and Michael Beale ever been seen at the same time? Serious question."
Well, it is safe to say that things are not going as Rangers fans would have envisioned when the Martin appointment was made. We are barely a few games into the season and there is already a feeling of inevitability around his future at Ibrox. That is never a good thing if you are a manager.
For Celtic, it is time to focus on what is ahead, although the issues at Ibrox will help them. For now, they need all their attention on the Kairat Almaty game.
